OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of the presentation,
participants will be able to:

Distinguish between a stereotype and a
generalization and know how to use the
latter appropriately.
- Identify common sources of conflict among
culturally diverse staff members.
Discuss the cultural meaning of various
forms of both verbal and nonverbal
behavior.
- Describe the medical beliefs/practices
of various cultures as they differ from
"traditional" Western beliefs/practices and
explain how these differences may cause
breakdowns in the delivery of health care
services.
- Identify practical/efficient ways to reduce
cross-cultural misunderstandings.

Workshop Description
Medical Anthropologist, Geri-Ann Galanti, PhD,
will be addressing cultural issues that often
arise in all areas of the workplace and that can
lead to conflict and misunderstanding among
staff members and between patients and health
care providers. She will also present strategies
for reducing conflict and providing both a more
harmonious work environment and better health
care for patients.

About the Speaker:
Gwen Thoma, EdD, RN, CNA, BC
Dr. Geri-Ann Galanti is a leading expert in the field of cultural diversity. She received her doctorate in Anthropology from UCLA with an emphasis in medical anthropology and is currently on the faculty of the School of Nursing at Cal State University, Dominguez Hills, the Anthropology Department at CSU Los Angeles, and the Doctoring Program at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
She is the author of the highly acclaimed book, Caring for Patients from Different Cultures, with a 4th edition in press. She served for several years as Medicine and Culture section editor for WJM (Western Journal of Medicine).
Dr. Galanti is a frequent speaker at hospitals and conferences. She was one of the major developers of the curriculum for the CSUDH’s School of Nursing course on Human Diversity. Her work on a cable TV show on Culture and Health has been the recipient of numerous awards, as has the educational video, “Patient Diversity: Beyond the Vital Signs,” based upon her book and on which she acted as consultant.
She is currently serving as Cultural Consultant on a grant project with the University of California medical schools to train medical students and residents about issues around end-of-life care.
