| The Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation
programs follow specific guidelines for exercise
in keeping with the American College of Sports
Medicine and the American Association of Cardiovascular
and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
In August 2002, Southeast Missouri Hospital was
awarded Program Certification for its Cardiac
Rehabilitation Program by the American Association
of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation
(AACVPR). Certification recognizes those programs
rigorously reviewed by a national board and found
to meet exacting standards of care. The Hospital's
program is one of just three ACCVPR-certified
programs in the region.
At Southeast, a three-phase inpatient/outpatient
Cardiac Rehab program is tailored to meet the
individual needs of patients with cardiac disease
and patients recovering from a heart attack, a stent implant or heart bypass, valve or transplant surgery.
The outpatient phase of Southeast's Cardiac/Pulmonary
Rehab program includes a monitored program of
exercise and informative, beneficial classes about
risk factor reduction and the benefits of a healthy
lifestyle.
What's involved in Cardiac Rehab?
Through supervised exercise, education and support
programs, Southeast's Cardiac Rehabilitation team
provides individualized care to help patients
accept their conditions, overcome fears, and make
appropriate lifestyle changes. Our Cardiac Rehab
specialists, trained by some of the nation's leading
Cardiac Rehab experts, tailor each rehab program
to meet the individual patient's unique needs. |

Phase I: The
initial phase of Southeast's Cardiac Rehab program
begins during the time the patient is hospitalized
recovering from a heart-related problem or surgery.
Phase II: The second phase of
the program incorporates a 12-week monitored exercise
program and educational sessions on topics such
as cardiac risk factors, stress management and
low-fat eating. A supermarket tour in Phase II
helps participants learn how to shop “heart
smart.” |
In Phase II, patients attend, on
an outpatient basis, exercise sessions one to
three times per week. These sessions are held
in Southeast's Cardiac Rehab Department, located in Southeast Medical Plaza in Suite #311. Program participants use treadmills, arm ergometers, stationary bicycles, seated steppers, and weights under the supervision of RNs and exercise physiologists who help them attain cardiovascular fitness.
Phase III: This phase is a continuation of Phase II activities, but do not wear a cardiac monitor and it is self paid.
Pulmonary Rehab
Southeast's Pulmonary Rehabilitation program was certified by the American Association of Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation in 2004.
Southeast's Pulmonary Rehab program helps individuals limited by pulmonary disease or lung surgery. While there is no cure for pulmonary disease, Pulmonary Rehab can help reduce hospitalizations, preserve breathing capacity, and improve quality of life.
Satellite Cardiac Rehab
Phase II Cardiac Rehab patients who live near Dexter or Sikeston, MO may participate in a satellite rehab programs at Dexter Memorial Hospital or Missouri Delta Medical Center. An RN is present at the satellite and electrocardiogram monitoring performed at the Dexter facility is transmitted to Southeast's Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehab Department where it can be observed by Southeast's Cardiac Rehab staff. |
