Nurse Residency Program

Purpose

The Southeast Missouri Hospital Residency Program for nurses is designed for graduate nurses, nurses wishing to re-enter the nursing workforce, nurses seeking a practice environment change, and nurses waiting for a permanent unit assignment, which is not available upon employment. The nurses will have the opportunity to continue their professional development through a sheltered mentoring experience that will include classroom learning and supervised clinical experiences.

Objectives

By the completion of this full time 16-week program, the nurse will be able to:

  • Demonstrate clinical competency as a registered nurse in a multidisciplinary capacity.
  • Demonstrate sound critical thinking process for clinical situations.
  • Organize work and utilize time management techniques in the work setting.
  • Develop and demonstrate customer service skills.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care for multiple patients.
  • Demonstrate effective patient and family teaching.
  • Identify patient needs and make appropriate referrals to hospital and community resources.
  • Provide sound nursing care reflective of current standards of practice.
  • Assume responsibility for their own learning outcomes.

Residency Tracks

The nurse selects one of these areas for the 16-week residency. After orientation to the hospital, the nurse enters one of the following tracks:

Critical Care Residency
Opportunities in our Cardiothoracic Unit, Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department and Cardiovascular Services.

Medical-Surgical Residency
Select experience in areas such as Surgical Progressive Care, Medical Progressive Care, Surgery Unit, Oncology and/or Neurology.

Maternal-Child (available only when OB positions are available)
Select experience from NICU, Nursery, Labor/Delivery and Postpartum Care and Pediatrics.

Perioperative Residency
Opportunities available for Recovery Room, Surgery, Pre-op or Pre-Admitting.

Lecture, case studies, post-conferences and hands-on experience are utilized as learning activities. The program will be coordinated by a clinical-based program manager.
