Prevent poisoning, but
be prepared
- Dial 1-800-222-1222 for the Poison Prevention
Hotline. Your call will be connected to the
state center where you are located. This number
is monitored 24 hours a day.
- Roughly 85 percent of all poisonings can be
treated at home with advice from the professionals
at the Poison Center.
- Keep Syrup of Ipecac in your home. But NEVER
give a child Ipecac or anything else without
first getting medical advice.

Carbon Monoxide
(CO) is an invisible, odorless gas that can cause
illness or death. Here are some CO poisoning prevention
tips:
- Consider installing CO detectors in your home
- Have gas and all burning appliances (furnace,
water heater, ovens) inspected annually
- Be sure space heaters are properly vented
- When using a fireplace, open the flue for
adequate ventilation
- Never use barbecue grills indoors
- Have your vehicle inspected for exhaust leaks.
Do not run your vehicle in a garage, even with
the door open
